Gun Runners - Web - W17

On February 15th Freeblock, Student Services will be teaming up with World Studies to host a viewing of the documentary “Gun Runners”. Canadian (West Island MTL) documentary filmmaker Anjali Nayar will join us via Skype from Kenya for a Q & A following the screening. “When it comes to world-class marathon runners, Kenyans are considered the cream of the crop. Particularly those from Kenya’s Rift Valley. These athletes have won marathons in London, New York and Berlin, and have set countless world records. But some of Kenya’s top runners aren’t running for fame and fortune. Some are wanted warriors, running for their lives. For years, Julius Arile and Robert Matanda thrive among the roaming bands of warriors that terrorize the North Kenyan countryside. By the time they reach their mid-twenties, stealing cattle, raiding and running from the police is the only life they know. So when both warriors suddenly disappear from the bush, many of their peers assume they are dead or have been arrested. Instead, they trade in their rifles for sneakers—in the hopes of making it big as professional marathon runners. Years of fleeing from the police have prepared the men for running marathon distances, but do they have what it takes to overcome the corruption, mistrust and jealousy that threaten to derail their careers? Or will they give up on their dreams and return to a life of easy power and money? Told entirely by its central characters, Gun Runners is the American Dream, Kenyan-style.”

The Champlain Saint-Lambert Cavaliers are pleased to announce that they have partnered with Soccer Placement through the 2020 soccer season. Soccer Placement, located in Longueuil, Quebec, was founded to give the maximum number of high-caliber athletes aged 16 to 20 the opportunity to be scouted by NCAA & USport coaches, as well as European scouts. The agreement provides our student-athletes in soccer with the prospect to explore and look for the possibility of scholarships at these levels. “This agreement will help us provide our student-athletes a better chance to find the college or university that best suits them once they’re done here at Champlain,” said Vince Amato, Coordinator of Athletics at Champlain Saint-Lambert. “The opportunity for them to get a great education while continuing to play soccer is a win-win. We look forwards to working with Soccer Placement to help make this happen for our student-athletes.” “It’s an honor to finalize this partnership with Champlain Saint-Lambert as it facilitates our ability to follow-up on the academic progress of the student-athletes in the college who’ve been recruited for our showcases or who would like to opportunity to gain exposure with American or Canadian universities, or European professional club recruiters,” stated Serge Epoh, founder of Soccer Placement. “I want to thank the staff and coaches at Champlain for their help and for their confidence in Soccer Placement.”
