Human Resources is an integral component of any organization’s business strategy, and as such it requires a comprehensive set of interconnected skills. HR professionals plan, organize, and evaluate the operations of personnel departments to recruit and retain the human capital that best permits an organization to thrive. The HR team requires leadership capabilities to motivate and mesh together a diverse workforce, optimizing productivity and job satisfaction. Communication skills are of utmost importance in all aspects of the position, from reading stacks of applications, conveying the specifications of occupations hired for, to speaking and listening to management and employees to determine needs and focus. Organization skills are required to maintain a systematic approach to problem solving and wisely manage time. HR professionals are the conscience of the company, so discretion, apt judgment and a commitment to the truth are important to uphold. The following essential job functions will reveal the value of multitasking, as learned with a DEC in Human Resources. On a typical day, HR professionals will have to deal with such diverse tasks as an employee’s personal issues, a manager’s immediate recruitment needs and compensation management. Recruitment and Hiring Interpersonal and decision-making skills are necessary to find the right people for the job. Identifying the best talent comes with practice, integrating social media tools and effective strategy. HR is the face of the organization and must both communicate efficiently and effectively represent the company. Evaluating talent means understanding non-verbal communication, excellent listening and other soft skills. Training and Development Communication, organization and leadership skills are vital to create effective training programs, instruct and present material, and accurately assess employee comprehension and job suitability. Team members will want to grow with the company and so understanding the best fit for an employee’s skills will be valuable for retention. Compensation and Benefits Human Resources Management professionals must work with management to develop an effective compensation system and benefit structures. Maintaining attractive compensation packages are essential to retaining top talent and acquiring new employees. This requires analytical, negotiation and problem solving skills to assess the overall package in relation to industry norms and present insights to management. Performance Evaluation Successful HR managers balance the needs of employees and management to win trust from all concerned. Establishing and implementing a complete performance improvement process is a challenging but rewarding role of human resources to encourage ongoing professional development. Productive evaluation frames development positively, requiring versatile communication skills and assessment techniques. Conflict management skills and understanding a problem from both sides are skills learned in a human resources program. Finance and Administration Business acumen is needed to effectively strategize and communicate company goals to the workforce. An HR manager must increasingly be aware of big-picture strategy to move the company forward while working with an established budget. It takes a combination of all an HR manager’s skills to empower, motivate and optimize an organization’s people management.

career possibilities in HR

The secret to a rewarding career in the quickly growing field of human resources is to seek the proper training with a DEC in Human Resources. It is a profession that demands integrity, tact and many types of communication skills. As its role in an organization continues to transition towards encompassing strategic requirements, business management and finance skills are becoming increasingly important. Acquiring the necessary talent recruitment, performance management, negotiation, training and organizational behavior capabilities will open doors to diverse career possibilities within human resources. The role of an HR professional will vary depending on the size and type of organization, with work in smaller companies covering a varied set of responsibilities. Most get their start in the industry by working as an HR Administrator, gaining an appreciation of how HR functions within an overall organization. Responsibilities increase as an HR Assistant, with a larger role in the recruitment and training process. Human Resources Management careers in larger organizations generally require specialization. Recruiting and placement managers search for promising job candidates by interviewing and testing applicants. Some make the final decisions. Jobs may be within HR departments of organizations or talent recruitment agencies with positions as recruiter, headhunter, test administrator or employment manager. Development and training specialists analyze, coordinate and conduct training for all levels of an organization. They educate employees about necessary job skills for advancement and create training manuals, procedures and tools. Trainers provide knowledge, practical skills and motivation to staff and are increasingly involved in strategic direction. Jobs in this specialization include career planner, training specialist, technical recruitment specialist and orientation specialist. Compensation specialists develop and administer job evaluations, manage wage and salary systems, and design incentive plans and stock options. Benefit specialists provide information and counseling to employees about fringe benefits, while analyzing benefit plan cost and effectiveness. Related jobs include compensation analyst or manager, salary administrator, benefits administrator, group insurance manager, and employee assistance program manager. Employee relations specialists maintain healthy working environments by managing work-life programs and employee grievances. Labour relations specialists, mediators, and arbitrators may deal with union contracts, negotiate collective bargaining agreements and handle formal grievance procedures. Health and safety specialists develop related programs, conduct safety inspections, collect accident data, report safety records, prepare government reports and liaise with security agencies, as necessary. Related positions include safety specialist, security officer, industrial nurse and employee welfare manager. Other HR specialists may work for governmental agencies, executive search firms, consultants or outplacement agencies. Some may work as equal employment opportunity representatives, employee communications or assistance program managers. Human resource information system specialists are experts in computer programming, hardware or user skills, and are responsible for designing and delivering training programs. Occupational psychologists combine psychology and HR skills to increase job satisfaction and performance, while sometimes consulting for organizational change. A good human resources program will develop professional qualifications in many areas to encourage adaptation or specialization for long and rewarding HR careers.

Champlain College Saint-Lambert is pleased to announce that  Alain Blondeau will be the new Offensive Coordinator of the Champlain Cavaliers Football team. Coach Blondeau is coming back to coaching after taking a year off, prior to which he led the Édouard-Montpetit Football program dating back to 1999. “I am very happy that Alain accepted to become our new OC. His vast experience of the game will help our current players and his knowledge of the different teams on the South Shore will contribute positively to our recruitment,” said Head Coach Frank Chagnon, of the Champlain Cavaliers. “Alain knows what we value here at Champlain and how we view the student-athlete experience. He knows that we want to see a prosperous football program, but not at the expense of a student-athlete’s education.” Coach Blondeau started his coaching career in the 1970′s with the St-Hubert Rebelles. He taught football at Collège Charles-Lemoyne and founded the Metro.com team for the Wilson Challenge. He brought the Édouard-Montpetit team to the Bol d’Or semi-finals after their second season in the Division 1 league. Over the years, Coach Blondeau has assisted in the development of student-athletes such as Mathieu Bertrand, Patrick Dorvelus and Kristian Matte. He holds a Level 3 certification from the NCCP and has participated in numerous coaching clinics in the USA. “Following a one year break, I’ve decided to return to coaching in order to help young men become better student-athletes,” stated Blondeau. His nomination is effective immediately.

The Cavaliers started the second half of their seasons this past Sunday (January 12) with a double-header at home against South Shore rivals, Édouard-Montpetit. The ladies, who were 6-2 going into the holiday break and in 4th place in the highly competitive RSEQ league, got off to a slow start but managed to take a 30-23 lead into half-time. The second half was explosive for the Cavaliers as they dominated, outscoring les Lynx 31-9 in the 2nd half alone. The win moves the Cavaliers, who are now 7-2, ahead of Ste-Foy and into 3rd place due to Dawson currently having the tie-breaker. Jeanne Gaumont had 16 points for the Cavaliers while Isabelle Dion and Sirah Diarra each had 12 points and 8 rebounds. The men have had a tough first half and are currently in 6th place with a 2-8 record. With new Head Coach Dan Martin at the helm, the Cavaliers were looking to get a key victory to stay in the play-off race. The team started of slow, falling behind in the early minutes but by the end of the 1st quarter they were up by 1. The pace was rough and tumble, with a lot of back and forth between two fairly matched teams. At the half, the Cavaliers had upped their lead to 5, 33-28. The team exploded in the 3rd quarter, outscoring Édouard 22-7 and took a 20 point lead into the home stretch. The game ended with the Cavaliers winning 66-52 in what many considered to be a must-win. Kasheem Thomas led the team with 21 points, while Alex Paquin, playing his first game since late October, scored 14. Sebastien Denault had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Nick Harvey was also a force on the boards with 10 rebounds. Both teams head uptown to face Vanier on Thursday, January 16th. The women tip-off at 7:00 PM while the men begin at 9:00 PM.
